Before applying, we strongly encourage you to visit our campus, observe class sessions, and meet the staff to determine if Daoist Traditions is the right environment for you. Applicants interested in transferring course work from another college of acupuncture or Chinese medicine, please see our MAHM Admissions page for details . Daoist Traditions is dedicated to upholding a high standard of education to ensure that the public is served by caring, competent, and knowledgeable practitioners. The program requires a high level of commitment to learning a number of difficult skills. We seek applicants who can demonstrate that they have the motivation for the rigors of this type of program and learning process. The Daoist Traditions community strives to cultivate a healing presence and convey that healing presence in all we do. Accordingly, we seek students who recognize that all life experiences provide opportunities for growth and change. Applicants must demonstrate the maturity, emotional stability, and good judgment essential to become effective practitioners. The College attracts a student population who share a deep commitment to the study and practice of Chinese medicine and an interest in their personal growth. Our most successful students have strong study and time management skills, the support of their family and friends, and a solid financial plan to support their studies. We take into consideration your previous academic record and professional experience as well as your desire to help others through a healing profession. Applicants are considered on the basis of individual merit without regard to gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, race, veteran status, national or ethnic origin. MAHM/DAHM Admissions Requirements Applicants who meet the admissions requirements for the Doctor of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (DAHM) program are encouraged to dually enroll in the MAHM/DAHM. Applicants who do not qualify for the DAHM or who choose not to dually enroll may enroll in the Master of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (MAHM) program only. MAHM students have a limited time to apply to the DAHM and must apply in specified admissions cycles before beginning the second year of the MAHM program. After that time, students must graduate from the MAHM program before applying to the DAHM completion track. Academic standing, disciplinary actions, and professionalism issues will be considered for applicants who do not enroll in the DAHM from the beginning of their MAHM studies. See Catalog for details. Your application packet must include all required documents. Our Admissions Director will contact you to schedule interviews with members of the Admissions Committee once the following application materials have been received: Official college transcripts: minimum of three years and 90-semester credits or 135 quarter units of general education at the baccalaureate level from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education, or an equivalent international entity Documentation showing completion of specific prerequisites in biology and psychology. These prerequisites may be met by one of the following means: Completion of courses in undergraduate education. Transcripts must be sent directly to Daoist Traditions from the institution; Completion of College-level Examination Placement (CLEP) or American Council on Education (ACE) credit courses with the minimum credit-granting scores achieved. Scores must be sent directly to Daoist Traditions from the College Board; or Completion of the following professional-level certificate courses, via coursera.org, a massive open online course (MOOC) provider: The Little Stuff - Energy, Cells and Genetics (University of Colorado Boulder) and Introduction to Psychology (Yale University). Certificates of completion/transcripts must be forwarded to Daoist Traditions. English Language Competency Academic success is dependent upon the student’s ability to understand, speak, read, and write in English. The level of proficiency needed for a graduate-level academic program is greater than that required for daily living. English language competency is required of all students seeking admission to the program.     MAHM, MAHM/DAHM, CLINIC < Back Brian Hightower MAOM, L.Ac. Faculty Brian earned his BA in Psychology in 1997 from the University of Georgia, with a secondary focus in philosophy. After working in libraries for almost 10 years, Brian earned a Masters in Library and Information Science from Dominican University in 2005. A few years later, Brian's path lead him to a career change, and Asheville. He earned his MAOM degree in 2013 from Daoist Traditions, and has been continuing his studies of classical Chinese medicine ever since. As a Chinese medicine practitioner, Brian's goals are to cultivate mindfulness in everyday living and to harmonize mind, body, and spirit. When he is not supervising in the clinic or treating patients, he is usually enjoying the riches of nature, honing his musical talents, practicing tai chi, or pondering the mysteries of the universe.

    Daoist Traditions College offers a wide variety of opportunities & services to its students. Student Services Daoist Traditions offers student services and activities to make your experience both rewarding and successful. Through participation in organizations, events, and activities, students create the community that will support them both during school and into the future. Student Services Library Scholarship Opportunities Policies & Consumer Information Communications All students are provided with a Daoist Traditions email address which is used for all email communications. Phone calls are made when information is time-sensitive. We utilize Canvas for all classroom activities and communications. Students are also provided with an on-campus mailbox for receiving notices. Meetings Orientation is scheduled for all students each semester. These all-school meetings are an opportunity to make announcements and communicate updates to the larger community. Each semester students are invited to attend President’s Receptions to foster open lines of communication between the student body and the administration. Additionally, curriculum review meetings provide an opportunity for students to share feedback on their courses. Community Development Daoist Traditions is dedicated to preserving its strong student community and offers team-building exercises at orientation each semester to support the bond between students and their cohort. Tutoring Peer tutoring is a free service which provides one-on-one assistance for students having difficulties in specific courses. Peer tutors are advanced students who have achieved success in their courses and enjoy learning by teaching others. Private tutoring with faculty members is available upon request. Career Development The college offers courses in practice management and marketing to help students become successful practitioners. Clinical interns are encouraged to take initiative to build their clientele through self-promotion and outreach in the community. Students can hone their presentation skills by participating in open houses, health fairs, and speaking at public events. Registration and Transcripts The Registrar’s Office provides service regarding course registration, grade reporting, and transcript requests and is guided by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) in managing student information. Health Services The Daoist Traditions College Clinic is a place for both student education and quality healthcare. Students are encouraged to receive acupuncture treatments to stay healthy and to help ease the stress of studying. Enrolled students receive discounted healthcare services at the clinic. Library The library collections contain a broad selection of publications on Chinese medicine, western medicine, and related topics. The collection includes texts, journals, and audio/visual aids. The library collection and journal databases can be searched online. The library and computer lounge provide wireless internet, copy and print services, and library staff to assist students. Student ID Cards Each student is issued an identification card. The card can be used for a variety of discounts in the Asheville area and online. Student Organizations Activities and organizations that meet the needs of students and focus on academic achievement are encouraged. Students interested in forming new organizations must complete an Application for Student Organization and be approved by the dean of students. All organizations must follow the guidelines set by the college. Student Representation The Student Government Association works to enhance the student experience at Daoist Traditions and to promote leadership and participation within the student body. The SGA encourages students to work together for support and inspires students to take part in policies relating to Chinese medicine at large. Social events and activities that enhance student learning are offered throughout the year. Each MAHM cohort elects a class representative. Elections are held annually. Other Activities The annual convocations such as Lunar New Year and the graduation ceremony are important mechanisms for celebration, enjoyment, and balance in the students’ schedule. Each spring, the administration and clinical faculty host dinner receptions for students entering the third and fourth years to honor the milestones in their clinical training. Placement Assistance The college receives notices regularly for professional opportunities. Graduating students can search the online directory for job openings, space to rent, and practices for sale. Alumni Relations The administration strives to keep graduates connected to the college, on both social and professional levels. Continuing education courses and social events invite graduates to return to the college and meet with faculty, other alumni, and students.     Our CCHM program is a postgraduate course for acupuncturists seeking training in Chinese Herbal medicine. Now Scheduling Free Herbal Consultations Certificate in Chinese Herbal Medicine Clinic Our Certificate in Chinese Herbal Medicine program is a postgraduate course for acupuncture practitioners who are seeking comprehensive training in Chinese Herbal medicine. The 24-month program teaches practitioners to safely and effectively incorporate the use of Chinese herbs into their clinical practice. Before graduating, students are required to hold supervised clinical hours with patients. On select days from August through March, we will hold clinics on our beautiful Montford campus and at our college clinic. Our small cohort of six interns practice diagnosing patients and prescribing herbs in a theater-style clinic setting. These appointments are completely free of charge, after which you can purchase your personalized, prescribed herbs. To ensure a wide variety of patients, we ask that you book no more than once a month for the duration of the clinic. As a thank you for participating, you will also receive one free acupuncture session per herbal appointment from our downtown student clinic. All appointments must be in person.
