Michael Destri's exposure to Chinese medicine started in young adulthood when he received acupuncture for a head injury. During those sessions, his acupuncturist, Dr. Tian, became a mentor and friend, and encouraged him to study acupuncture professionally. After receiving a B.A. from Emory University in 2014, he worked for the Florida Department of Health before pursuing a doctoral degree from Daoist Traditions College in Asheville, NC. Following graduation, he completed a short mentorship with Dr. Tian, then moved to Oregon where he practiced in various clinical settings, learning multiple different acupuncture styles. After several years there, he joined an integrative practice in Nashville, TN before making his way back to Asheville. Michael's acupuncture style is rooted in Daoist principles, hinging on the view that optimal health and longevity is achieved by aligning with the cycles of nature as much as modern life permits. By interpreting Western medical diagnoses through the lens of East Asian medicine, he develops individualized treatment plans that combine classical Chinese medicine ideology with functional medicine principles. Taking into account pharmaceutical medications, lifestyle, diet, and concurrent therapies, his clinical approach aims to recalibrate the body and mind, which in turn reawakens the spirit to live harmoniously with nature's cycles. He is a passionate advocate for patient autonomy, and finds that the best clinical outcomes occur when patients are well-informed and actively involved in their health journey.
